Media Diary Post

I have researched into other artists digipacs which inspired me when I came to draw my rough designs for my own digipacs. I looked at albums such as the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and OK GO as they linked well with the genre of The Costigans.

I have designed three sets of design ideas which consists of an album with wings on the front cover; an front album cover which consists of text; and then other was the outline of men in the band.

I really liked the design idea with the wings on the front of the album as this links very well with the name of the song. I also liked the outline of five men as this links well with the band as there are five men in the band. I do not think the design idea of just text will look as good as others I have designed as it is very simple and does not say anything about the band.

Next, I am going to draw the three design ideas in much more detail which will give me a better idea on which design I like best. I will then scan them in like I scanned my rough sketches.

The image above is a screen grab of the work I have done so far on my music video editing. I am using the program final cut pro to edit shots together to create my music video. I like what I have edited together so far as I think it fits very well to the track I have chosen due to the filming I have done being quite romantic and loving.
Next I am going to keep editing my music video, I am going to use the filming of the band and the couple in the daytime and night time.

Rough designs for my digipac

I have drawn very quick ideas for the digipac I am going to create for the track Sound the Angels by The Costigans.

I wanted to link with the title Sound the Angels, so I chose to do quick sketches of wings in different styles and different compositions. I prefer the quick sketch in the middle as It includes a lot more detail, and when I come to do the drawing in detail it will look even better. So, I will be drawing the design in the middle in much more detail.

I do not like the design idea to the right as I think the wing is too rounded which looks quite young and childish.

This is my second design idea page, I chose to do the designs in the style of OK GO's album which I included on my artist digipac post before. I said in that post that I could test different fonts which I have done on this design idea. I like the design idea on the right as I think this is a lot bolder and it also looks better than the other ideas I have created.

This is my third set of design ideas I have created. They are all in different compositions and I have taken inspiration from Green Days album cover. I prefer the first design idea I have created as it includes all five men in the band. If I chose a different idea such as one man from the band on the front of the cd cover as this would make him the main person in the band, rather than the whole band.

Research into other artists digipacs

I captured these photographs as I wanted to show that I have researched into other artists digipacs.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers Greatest Hits

This is the Digipac for Red Hot Chilli Peppers, I chose to include this on my research into artists digipacs as I like how randon the front cover of the album is. And, I also like the scribbly writing in the pull out.

OK GO Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky

I really like this digipac as it is very simple yet colourful. This would look good as The Costigans digipac as it is simple, and because it is simple it would link well with the Costigans genre which is alternative; rock and I personally think Indie, as they do not belong to a record label. I could try doing a digipac design which only has writing on the front cover and then try different fonts, to experiment with different styles.

Green Day International Superhits

I quite like the idea of drawing a simple outline of five men instead of three like Green Day as it really links with The Costigans as there is five people in the band. I also think it links very well with their genre and it is also interesting to look at in comparison to simple writing like the digipac for OK GO. The Costigans genre is alternative; rock and I also think Indie, which means that they want to look quite professional which is why I would not photograph the band doing silly actions as this does not look professional.

Panic At The Disco

This digipac is quite surreal in comparison to the other digipacs I have photographed. I like the flower pattern on the CD which would link quite well with the band and the title of the track. I also like the fact only three colours are used on the CD, which makes the flowers look like they are in the style of Banksy.

Maroon 5

This is Maroon 5's album, I have chosen to use this as one of the artists digipacs as I think the album looks like it could be The Costigans album. I also like the pull out which looks very professional.

Narrative theory

As I have just filmed my narrative for my music video, I chose to look at theories such as Todorov's Equilibrium theory, Propp's theory and also Denis Johnston's 7 plots.

These are Denis Johnston's 7 plots:

  • Unrecognised virtue at last recognised. the good is despised, but is recognised in the end, something that we all want to believe.
  • The Fatal Flaw, that is the groundwork for practically all classical tragedy.
  • The Debt that Must be Paid, the fate that catches up with all of us sooner or later.
  • Standard triangular plot of two women and one man, or two men and one woman
  • Boy meets Girl, Boy loses Girl, Boy either finds or does not find Girl: it doesn't matter which.
  • The Gift taken Away. This may take two forms: either the tragedy of the loss itself, or it may be about the search that follows the loss.
  • The Hero Who Cannot Be Kept Down.
  • The homeless loner.. Mostly the drifter rides into the sunset or walks into the fog.
I personally think that my narrative links with the 'Boy meets Girl' plot as I have filmed a narrative which includes a couple, and in my rough treatment I have written about how they fall out, but in the end the boy and girl end up together again happy. So, by looking at these narrative theories I can see that my narrative links in with one of the seven plots even though I did not realise before. I can now see how many films link with these seven theories such as Lord of the Rings as Aragon is seen as The homeless loner or in she's the man is the plot Boy meets Girl.

Media Diary Post

I have now finished the filming for my music video, I captured 40 minutes of filming which included the opening and ending scene, the couple together, day and night, and also the vocalist playing a guitar in a low lit room.
I will now use FilmCutPro to edit my music video together, and I will try to stick to the 3 second scene cut as this is typical in a music video.

Media Diary Post

I was not able to capture the narrative side of filming due to the weather so i have chosen to do it next week. I still need to film all of the narrative which includes the couple together, the actor/ vocalist playing guitar in a room and also the start and end to the music video.

In my rough treatment and also my storyboard, I chose to also film a narrative which includes the actor/ vocalist walking down a lit street at night. However, I have now chosen to not film this as I think it does not fit well to the track I am using and it does not link with the filming I have done/ about to do as well as other scenes.
