Research into Chosen Genre and The Costigans

The Costigans have given me permission to use their track 'Sound the Angels' for the music video am going to create for my A-level media project. So, I have researched into their genre and the band itself which may help me chose what type of music video I am going to create.

The band consists of five members called; John Najm (Vocals, Guitar), David Kirkland (Keys, Vocals), Alex Garrido (Drums), Edgar Lopez (Lead Guitar, Vocals) and Pedro Berrizbeitia (Bass, Vocals).

I found this band on the social networking site Myspace, and I then saw them on Facebook and both sites say they are of an 'alternative, rock, acoustic' genre. I then looked up the characteristics of these genres and as such, there is no definitive musical style for alternative rock, however, the typical instruments used by a band of this genre would be an electric guitar, bass guitar, drums and sometimes a keyboard. This is similar to the instruments that The Costigans use.

I personally think that The Costigans can also be seen as part of the Indie rock genre as Alternative rock originates from this genre. The band also rely on word of mouth, airplay, touring and especially the internet. I have seen them on an unsigned website which is another characteristic of an Indie band, when I was searching for a band.

The band is influenced by others such as The Beatles, Oasis, Nirvana, Goo Goo Dolls, Michael Jackson, Elton John, The Stone Roses, The Smiths, Kiss and Bush.
