Audience feedback for my music video, digipac and poster

Here is all of the feedback I have received from my music video, digipac and my poster. I put it all together on this blog post as I feel that it shows the outcome and the overall view of my media work.
Sian: I like the drawings on the digipac. The design is very eye catching because of the black and white contrasts against the gradient background. It’s a good idea to put the lyrics on the digipac as people can then get more involved and sing along to the song. I then saw the music video she has created, and it is so lovely and romantic, the narrative fits the song perfectly. I feel that in parts, the performance side of the music video could look more upbeat to the change in tempo later in the song. But other than that, it's a good watch!

Moir: The digipac design links with the calm vibe of the song; I would be questioning the design if the song was the genre heavy metal. I also like the use of the gradient as a background as it gives the digipac a lot more detail.

Ashley: The digipac has all of the details that a normal digipac has as it includes a barcode and also the small print at the bottom back section of the digipac. Having all these details makes the digipac look realistic. The music video is weird to watch as I am watching my friends in it! It looks like Sophie really knows how to edit a music video together due to the transitions and the blurred effect she has created on her narrative. I have seen this before to show the change in time so the narrative could be set in the past, at least before the narrative at the start of the music video. I think the narrative should be a bit more colourful and brighter, as this would create a much better, happier mood and feel to the narrative.

Ben: I like the colour of the gradient background; it is not too bold so the detailed drawings are eye catching. I also think it was a good idea to change the colour of the writing to white as black would not be as bold against the drawings and the background. I would like to see the digipac printed and then put together to see what it physically looks like. I bet it's good. I have already given feedback on the digipac you created before, and so I know that you want a clear link between the digipac and poster. You have clearly made this link and it is easy to see that the poster and digipac belongs to The Costigans. I also really like how you have included a magazines rating of the band and their song, making it look much more realistic.

Deb: The best thing about this poster is the large wing on the model’s back, it looks so detailed and there are so many things to look at it. I also like the font you have used on the poster. The use of the wings, font, background and colour makes a clear link between the digipac and the poster. This looks very good as then the public would recognise an advert of The Costigans when they see it due to the features like the wings and the font. I have also seen the music video that she has filmed and edited together. I do like the music video; I like how well the filming is in sync with the music track. I also like the transitions and effects used on the music video to show different settings and a change in time. I feel that this music video could have been improved by perhaps using another location for the narrative, as I feel it is quite repetitive if you have seen the music video more than once.

Tim: I personally like the small details that are included on this poster such as the use of adding a 'remix' and also the review from a well known magazine, making the band look much better. I also like how bold the writing and the drawings are, making them eye catching, like a poster should be.

Media Diary Post

I have just finished creating my digipac and my poster for the band The Costigans who sang the track sound the Angels. I also gained audience feedback for both of these designs which were very good. I enjoyed creating these as it has helped me to learn how to use applications better such as Photoshop and Illustrator., which will help me when I go to university. Next, I am going to put all of my audience feedback for my video, digipac and poster and compare all of my reviews. I am then going to evaluate the music video I created.

Finished poster and audience feedback

This is my finished poster. A lot of work went in to creating this poster, especially when it came to editing the poster together as I had to put a filter on a photograph and then transfer it onto a separate file which had the gradient background. This took a lot of time as there were many white patches around the photograph of the model. Making my digipac before my poster meant that I had already got the wing design, so all I did was copy and paste this wing design onto my poster design. I chose to follow small rules when it came to designing my poster which was: using similar backgrounds and colours; include the wing and use the same font. These aspects would help the audience relate the digipac to the poster, without each piece of illustration looking too similar or even looking like I have simply copied one design to the next. I have also gained audience feedback for my poster to see what they think of my design and anything I should have done to improve my work.

Audience Feedback

Ben: I have already given feedback on the digipac you created before, and so I know that you want a link between the digipac and poster, but you don’t want them to look the same. You have clearly made this link and it is easy to see that the poster and digipac belongs to The Costigans. I also really like how you have included a magazines rating of the band and their song, making it look much more realistic.

Deb: The best thing about this poster is the large, detailed wing on the back of the model, it is very detailed and there are so many things in it. I also like the font you have used on the poster. The use of the wing, font, background and colour makes a clear link between the digipac and the poster, but by having the model in the design and a different composition, it is also interesting to look at and different. This looks very good as then the public would recognise an advert of The Costigans when they see it due to the features like the wings and the font.

Tim: I personally like the small details that are included on this poster such as the use of adding a 'remix' and also the review from a well known magazine especially with the wings instead of star ratings, making the band look much better. I also like how bold the writing and the drawings are, making them eye catching, like a poster should be.

Media Diary Post

This is what I have done so far on my poster design. As I stated in the last diary post, I added little details which are seen in typical, industry standard advertisements. So far, I have added little details such as the name of the band and the name of the track, with a typical remix. So far it looks very good, I like the composition of the design, and it looks a lot better than a design which sits on the middle, parallel on either side. I am glad I looked at the golden as it has really helped me when I have come to manipulating my design as it is easier to know where to put the writing and sections that have not got anything on it.

I have still got the small wing on the bottom right hand side of the design, and I have now chosen to take it out due to it being too eye catching, and I don’t want my design to look too similar to my digipac.

As you can see on the wing, I have taken away sections of the wing. I chose to do this as I wanted the wing to look like it fit on the models back, which is why I have taken some of the wing away instead of it looking like it has been stuck over the model. I think this looks a lot better as it looks more life-like and original, as the wing then looks a little different to the wing on my digipac. I kept two strands of the wing over the model to see if it looked good however, I think I am going to take it off as this looks a little random on my design, so I am going to take it off. I also took away the small, detailed wing at the bottom right of the design which makes my poster look a lot better and more professional. I felt that this wing was too eye catching on the design which is not what I originally wanted.

I also added the typical details which are included in all conventional posters which are: a critic’s rating of the single I am promoting; telling the public that the single is out now and the name of the critic who reviewed the single. On typical reviews, they include a star rating of the single/ album, I felt that stars would be too bold on my design due to their shape, and so I took the wing from my digipac and made it a lot smaller, and then used five of the small wings instead of starts to show the rating. I feel that this little detail makes the design look much better and individual in comparison to other critic reviews, and it is also personal to the band as I have used this wing in the digipac and now the poster.

You can see that I have experimented with both of these designs by moving around the written side of the poster around. I feel that the better poster is the second screen grab as it is not too close to the edge of the poster like the other. The only improvement I feel that I should make is that there is too much writing stacked on top of each other, so, to amend this I will change the composition of the critic’s review, so it is all one sentence instead of two sentences. This will then make then make the text look a lot better due to it looking a lot more spacious and professional.

These two print screens are very similar; the difference between them is the composition of the text which is very important as I am nearly finished editing my poster. The first print screen shows what I have done and how I have changed the composition of the critic’s review. I chose to make it into one sentence as having two sentences took up a lot of important space on my poster design.
The first print screen also shows that I tried to put the text in the centre of the poster, to see what it looked like. I felt that this composition did not fit well to the off- centre composition of the model with the wing. It does also not link well with the golden ration. I then moved on to placing the text to the right of the poster, which I had done before. I feel that this works a lot better than the print screen before as it keeps the viewers eye line at the detailed wing and it is much more appealing to look at.

This is my final design of my poster. The difference between this design and the last is the gradient background. I chose to make it a lot lighter as I wanted my design to look different to the digipac I created and also because I feel that it made a contrast between the lighter background and the black outline of the model, the detailed wing and the text.

I am really glad I have created such a professional and good looking poster as it was fun to create and I also learnt a lot such as how to change the filter on a photograph to make lines bolder or thinner. I feel that this poster does link well with the digipac but not as much as other designs I came up with as I have included a person with wings instead of a simple wing.

Final poster design

The screen grab above is the start of my final poster design in detail. I chose to use this photograph as it would link well to the lead singer of the band and also the music video, as it is the same person. I then manipulated the photograph by putting the stamp filter on the photograph, which is how I got the black and white simple design.

I then added a gradient background, which is very similar to the background I used on my digipac. I have included these small links to help the audience see and know that this poster links to the digipac. It is also very clean and professional, as there are not too many colours used, and they are quite bright, fresh colours. This is a similar gradient style to Chase and Status and the colours they used to promote their new tour, which I have spoken about in my research.

I am also going to include typical detail you would see on a poster advertising a new single such as: when it is released; critic’s feedback on the single; the name of the single; a second track which is a remix and also the lyrics to the track. All of these components will create a very interesting digipac which looks professional and links back to the digipac.

I have also added the wing on the models back and also a small wing in the bottom right corner of the poster. I chose to use the same wing as the design I used on my digipac to link back to the previous work I have done which helps the audience relate the two illustrations together. I angled the wing so it looked like it fit on the models back well. I like this design so far as it is dissimilar to the digipac; however, you can still see certain details which link well to the digipac. I also added the small wing in the corner of the design as I am not sure if I am going to include this detail yet. I want to include it as it will then link better to my digipac and it could be useful to fill up blank space. But, it may look quite random on the design and so I will see what it looks like when I come to editing my poster design further.

Media Diary Post

I have just scanned in my four ideas which I could have used for my final poster design. I do not think the other three designs will look as good as the one I have chosen to manipulate using Photoshop.

The Golden Ratio

“First, the golden ratio comes from nature; even the human body exhibits the golden ratio. Great works of art, ancient ruins and many artists used the golden ratio and there is a substantial body of evidence that shows it is not simply coincidence. If I was to compare another rule to it, I would have to bring up the rule of thirds.” The golden ration is very important when creating a professional piece of work as it is a sort of guide line, when creating a piece of work, similar to rules such as the rule o thirds. In this rule, the viewpoint needs to be the detailed section, and then its surrounding become less detailed as it gets closer to the corner of the page. I chose to look at this rule and link it with my chosen design as you can see I have used it, however, I have flipped this rule and the most detailed section of my design is the large wing in the left top corner.

As I have chosen this design which includes the wing I drew on my digipac, instead of drawing the design again, I copied and pasted the wing from one design on Photoshop to the other. I then added the manipulated photograph to the design and the band’s name in the same font as the digipac. The next post is in much more detail. I am going to begin editing my design to create my final poster design which will link well to the digipac I have created without looking exactly the same.

Designs for posters

I drew three very simple sketches to show my initial ideas for the poster I am going to be creating. I want a poster that fits to the genre of the band, links well to the digipac I have previously created and I would like it to look very good and eye catching, as otherwise, if it was out on the market being advertised, it would not make money for the band and company.

This is my first poster idea. I drew five men with the name of the band above them. This poster design would look good in detail, and would fit to the genre and the bands look due to the design being so simple. However, I feel that it would not link to the digipac I have created as it has wings on it and the bands name in flowing, smooth font. So I will not be taking this poster design any further than just a sketch as it does not fit what I have stated.

This design may be hard to understand as it is a rough sketch. To link with what I stated in the opening paragraph and the explanation to the first poster design, I have chosen to include a wing, very similar to the wing on my digipac. I have enlarged the wing on this sketch and I have thought of the very creative idea of drawing the faces of the band into the wing, with swirls and lines coming over their faces, to make them blend in and link in with the wing. This is such an exciting idea which would take a lot of time to plan and draw, as the wing would have to be drawn A3 as I would want the poster in much detail.
I feel that this design does not link to my statement as much as the next does. This is because I did not use this idea on my digipac, if I drew this for my digipac design and used the idea I would definitely use the same idea for the poster.

This is another very simple rough sketch of an idea that I have had. There is two wings, which sit either side of the box in the middle of the drawing. The box represents text, which would most likely be the name of the band in the swirly, flowing text which I used on my digipac. I feel that this design links best with the genre, the digipac and it would also be eye catching. I would not have to draw out the wings again as I have already drawn a very detailed design which I used before I started to edit and put together my digipac.

This is my last poster design. It is a model with a wing on his back, I would use the same wing and font I had used on my digipac to link back to my previous work thus making the band recognisable to the audience. This is my favourite design as I feel that it is a lot more interesting than any other design I have come up with and sketched. I feel that it would look very interesting and detailed in comparison to the other designs.

My overall chosen poster design idea that I want to experiment and take further in my work is the fourth design I have roughly drawn out. I feel that it links to my previous work, but also has its own individual details that make the poster different to my other pieces of work. It also links to the lyrics and the title of the bands track 'Sound the Angels' as it includes the wing I have previously drawn. I am very excited to create this poster as I had a lot of fun learning different techniques and tools on Photoshop and Illustrator.

Research into other artists posters

I researched different bands to find media such as tour posters and also new album posters to show that I have researched into other artists posters.

Panic at the Disco.

This is Panic at the Disco's tour poster. I chose to include this in my research as I like the different patterns used in the writing and at the top of the poster, as it is very similar to my digipac design. This means that I can take inspiration from certain aspects of this poster and create my own individual idea, which will link to my digipac design.

OK GO's new album out on iTunes.

I chose to include this in my research as I find that this band generally uses very simple ideas which are very effective such as their album cover I researched. The digipac was very simple but it was full of colour and it was interesting to look at due to the different fonts and colours. This new album poster again is very simple but I like that you can tell they are a bit wacky due to the statue-like position they are standing in with the random upside down bins behind them. And, they also call the new album an 'Extra nice edition' which is very comical.

The ideas I shall take from this poster is the simple colours as it looks very good as they have only used two colours.

Noah and the Whales new album poster.

This new album poster does not really link with my digipac design and I would like my digipac design and my album poster to link and so I am not inspired by this poster. I also think the poster looks quite old as it looks very worn and aspects such as the font is plain in comparison to The Costigans which are a very up to date band.

Chase and Status' tour poster

I really like this tour poster by Chase and Status as the important information is advertised in very bold writing as the bright yellow font contrasts against the dark background. I also like how it has little pictures next to the bands name which I think is a very good idea as it looks interesting.

If I chose to create a poster similar to this, next to the bands name I could draw little wings, which look like the wing on my digipac, as this will link both of my designs very well which is what I want.

Media Diary Post

I have finally finished editing together my music video and I used Film Cut Pro to do this. I am glad that I have finished as it has taken me a very long time and I also think the video looks very good. I have collected screen grabs of all the work I have done to show that I have completed putting the shots together.

Now I have done this, I am just going to raise the contrast on the video to make it look bold and bright like music videos on TV. I am also going to add in a few transitions to make the music video look very professional.

Finished Digipac and audience feedback

This is my finished digipac. I t took me a very long time to finish editing my work as I wanted it perfect and it includes quite a lot of little details such as different opacitys on my drawings and text to including barcodes. I gained audience feedback on my digipac as I wanted to know what they thought of my work and any ideas on how to improve it.

Audience Feeback

Sian: I like the drawings. the design is very eye catching because of the black and white contrasts against the gradient background. Its a good idea to put the lyrics on the digipac as people can then get more involved and sing along to the song.

Moir: The design links with the calm vibe of the song, I would be questioning the design if the song was the genre heavy metal. I also like the use of the gradient as a background as it gives the digipac a lot more detail.

Ashley: The digipac has all of the details that a normal digipac has as it includes a barcode and also the small print at the bottom back section of the digipac. Having all these details makes the digipac look realistic.

Ben: I like the colour of the gradient background, it is not too bold so the detailed drawings are eye catching. I also think it was a good idea to change the colour of the writing to white as black would not be as bold against the drawings and the background. I would like to see the digipac printed and then put together to see what it physically looks like. I bet it's good.

Media Diary Post

Digipac construction and screen grabs

Above is a screen grab of what I have done now. I have opened the Photoshop document on Illustrator and then I vectorised the individual designs so that I could create a coloured background without colouring the individual white sections of my design, thus making it easier for me to manipulate. I also made the designs smoother instead of rough like it was on Photoshop, I then manipulated the design black and white so I had a block-colour design. Next, I am going to create a background for my digipac which means I have nearly finished my digipac. I have liked creating this digipac as I have learnt a lot about Illustrator and the tools used to create a digipac.

I then experimented with different ways of creating a background on my digipac. My idea was to create a background with a gradient using the gradient tool on Photoshop, this would add more colours to my digipac to make it look much more interesting, and it would also contrast with my design idea.

I experimented by creating a separate gradient on each section of my digipac. I do not think this looks good as it looks too busy and it is also hard to put together and line up each separate coloured box.

I then tried another idea by creating two separate gradients for each side of the digipac. I think it looks a lot better as it is not too busy. Between the two designs I have used to experiment with backgrounds, I have chosen the design above as it does not look busy; it still has different colours and shades and I think it will look better as the end product.

I added the bands name and also the tracks name. I also placed a bar code onto my digipac as I want the digipac to look as realistic as possible, and it also fills up the blank space, making the digipac look much better.

I used the burn tool on Photoshop to create the edges of the digipac darker, adding little detail such as this will make my digipac look very professional. I also added some writing at the bottom of the digipac on the back of it, as this is what is on all professional digipacs. The writing is about a record company and their trademarks.

I also added detail which is on all digipacs which is the song lyrics, and also the tracks which could be on the digipac including a remix.

I then changed the colour of the text on my digipac as I feel that the black was too dark and dull against the background and also the drawings. I like how bold the writing is, making the bands name and track eye catching.

To link to the band I have chosen to make a music video, digipac and poster for, I have chosen to include a photograph of them in the digipac, and I have chosen to place this where the CD goes, so when the user gets the CD out, you will see the band. To do this I captured a photograph which is above of two of the people that I used in the music video. I then manipulated this photograph on Photoshop by putting a stamp filter on it. I did this as I felt that it fit well with the rest of the design. I then had to get rid of the white space around the two models which took a very long time as I used Photoshop to do this. Once I have deleted the whole background I can then transfer the edited image onto my digipac.

I flipped my digipac design round so I could sort out the image of the band properly. I copied and pasted the two models twice to make up the amount of people I filmed when I came to film my music video. I had to do this as I did not have enough people in the photograph, and I chose to include the whole band instead of two of the band members. I think it looks a lot better with the band members on the digipac as it relates to them better. I feel that the models are very bold on the page so I am going to change their opacity to 80% as this will keep the eye line at the other designs on the digipac. I also feel that the models look too similar, so I am going to edit them further to make different details thus making it look like I have included an image of four band members.

I have zoomed in on the are with the band members so I can show you that I have made details very different, to make it look like I have captured an image of all of the band members I included in my music video.
I feel that by including this image of the band members, it has linked back well to the music video, and it also shows the audience what the band looks like, which then makes them interact with the band members and recognise them if they saw them on TV or posters.
